Garage Conversion to ADU

The 1st level of a typical San Franciso house is converted to a legal ADU to host the parents of the owners.

Universal Design is key for this project as the couple plans to age in place.

ADU local code requirement

  • Walls, floor/ceilings designed to reduce noise transmission

  • Fire rated walls and door between garage and ADU

  • Sprinkler system in ADU

Adequate lighting, contrasted natural finishes, a fully accessible bathroom, and a kitchen adapted to aging in place accommodate the present and future needs of the retired couple. An open path from the entrance to the primary bathroom allows easy circulation throughout the ADU. Custom built-in cabinetry provides personalized organization while maintaining the minimalist Japandi style.
